How to Downsize Our Kitchen Garden Plan

Don't have a back forty? Our kitchen garden can be culled down to a 4'x8' raised bed that just about anyone with a sunny slice of a backyard can grow. While space-hogging melons and pumpkins are probably not an option, most plants are fair game.

1. Raise the Bed

Create a raised bed using cedar posts or purchase a raised bed kit. Then, follow our siting instructions.

2. Work in Order

Starting from the center and working outward, place a teepee or other freestanding trellis in the center of the garden to add visual height and provide structure for vining plants. Plant with cultivars that have been grown for their dwarf characteristics including tomatoes, green beans and cucumbers.

3. Layer Plants

Next create a second tier by layering in shorter plants that require staking, including peppers and eggplants. Site trailing vegetables, such as zucchini or squash, in the corners.

4. Plan Your Space

About 4 inches from the edge of the bed, sow seeds for quick growers — like radish and carrots — planting in rows 3-4 inches apart.

5. Finishing Touch

Finally, edge raised bed in leafy greens for color and good eats!
