Mary Anne Miller's interest in collecting was first sparked by her parents' collections. Now she continues the family tradition with this weekend hobby, adding to the treasures that her parents handed down. Here, a few of her proven collecting strategies:
Establish regular haunts. Find a favorite shop and visit regularly. When Mary Anne was looking for an old-fashioned high chair for Isabel, her daughter, Liza Werner of Sage Street Antiques, Sag Harbor, called her when she found one.
Have a strategy. Large antiques fairs and flea markets can be overwhelming if you don't have a plan. Mary Anne prefers the methodical approach, but brings a friend who shops differently and points out things she might have missed.
Shop on vacation. Seek out antiques shops when you go out of town. Says Mary Anne: "It's nice to look at something you brought back and be reminded of a specific time and place."
A Flair for Fix-Ups
An antique Magic Chef 1000 Series oven from the 1930s is the centerpiece of the room, setting the vintage tone. Mary Anne fell in love with this six-burner, two-oven version after noticing similar stoves on house tours and in antiques shops. During a Web search, she stumbled across a dealer who refurbishes and sells the old stoves, and happily signed on to the waiting list. "The stove was delivered in November, just in time for our first Thanksgiving in the house. It's perfect for entertaining and really helped bring the look together," she says.
The pastel-hued table and chairs may look like a perfectly coordinated set, but, surprisingly, they're not. Mary Anne picked up the simple round table at Sage Street Antiques and painted it her favorite shade, then began hunting for five-spindle arrowback chairs. After collecting several, she decided they "needed a little something extra" and painted each one a different candy-colored hue.
Standard mini-blinds with a small light green herringbone pattern on the tape let the sun stream in without any frilly distraction. The low-key creamy white walls are the perfect counterpoint to the lively painted furniture and collections, which take center stage in this cheerful room.
