Retro Revival Kitchen

Spied from the road on a drive through Sag Harbor, N.Y., the mid-19th-century charmer with the for-sale sign staked out on the lawn looked like just what Mary Anne Miller and her husband, Jeffrey Peters, were looking for. But the house needed work...especially the kitchen.

Butler's Pantry

Mary Anne immediately recognized the potential within the kitchen's rundown walls. "The house had been rented out for many years, so it was very unwelcoming as it was," she explains. "Despite that, we both realized that it was the kind of home we wanted to own. The sun streams in all day long." Picturing themselves unwinding on the front porch, taking in the view of Otter Pond just across the street, the couple couldn't help but snap up their dream home in the heart of the village.

Pictured: Mary Anne's collections and cookbooks are front and center in a butler's pantry just outside the kitchen. To create a visual connection between the two rooms, the couple painted the piece (and entryway walls) one shade lighter than the kitchen wainscoting. The shelves are painted pale blue to highlight the dishes stored there.

Retro Touches

Years of neglect had taken their toll, and the eat-in kitchen with the lovely light was in need of a serious face-lift. Mismatched cabinetry lined the walls, built-in shelves were rotting, and the appliances were in such rough shape that they had been removed. Luckily, the house was structurally sound and no renovation was needed; once the cabinets were ripped out, a bare square shell remained to work with.

Pictured: Little things imbue a room with personality. Pick up retro-style items--which, like the new toaster don't necessarily have a vintage pedigree--when you see them. Says Mary Anne, "I'm so happy that I bought things that I loved and later was able to put them to use."

Green Glass Dishware

Mary Anne revived the room with her retro sensibility, showcasing her collections of antiques-shop finds and making liberal use of her favorite color, green. The result: a bright, relaxed, vintage-style kitchen that's a joy to spend time in. And that never goes out of style.
