Do-It-Yourself Dream Kitchen - Part 3

Smart Details

On the Wall
Here is an easy way to create a focal point in any room: Find a group of prints you like (the egg prints shown here were purchased from eBay), then pop the pictures into inexpensive frames. Hang them together in a tight arrangement and voila --you have an instant collection.

Noteworthy
A quick coat of chalkboard paint turned the basement door into a handy place to write grocery lists and leave notes. Paint also transformed the base and legs of the breakfast table--from Unfinished Furniture Expo--which came with a butcher-block top and a natural alder base.

Get Comfortable
Since today's kitchen is as much a place to hang out as it is a workspace, it makes sense to include a few comfy touches throughout. Here, pillows from Elsa C. and a quilt from Quilts by Denise lend softness, while the clean lines of the Ikea side chairs keep the look classic.

In a Blue Mood
A pale shade of blue--Atmosphere Blue, to be exact, from Restoration Hardware--unifies this kitchen, giving it a fresh and airy appeal.

Hidden Storage

A storage bench like this one from Ikea is a great choice for a kitchen seating area. The top lifts to reveal hidden storage space inside — just the spot for bulk purchases such as paper towels or bottled water — and the cover comes off for machine washing.

Spice Cabinet

A Neat Idea: The size and shape of an old-fashioned ironing-board cabinet makes it the perfect place to store your spices. Just remove the ironing board and install narrow shelves.

Cork Tiles

Floored!: The owners laid the cork tiles themselves, and they're thrilled with the choice, a sustainable material that is comfortable to walk on and easy to clean.
