Cabinet and kitchen designer David T. Smith joined old with new in a 21st-century country kitchen, making the center of this Kentucky home cozy yet completely up-to-date.
The Grubbs Farmhouse
For Ali and Ryan Grubbs, the flare of a modern kitchen pales in comparison to one reminiscent of Grandma's farmhouse. The Grubbses' home, built on the Lancaster, Ky., farm of Ryan's grandmother and reassembled from the c. 200-year-old logs of three other homes as far away as Tennessee, combines the heritage of hand-hewn American furnishings with the Grubbs family's tradition as antiques collectors. And their kitchen could be no different.
Country Dining Room
The Grubbs called on designer and lifelong craftsman David T. Smith to reproduce the look of a gently used farmhouse kitchen. Now a place where Ali can reinvent Grandma's old apple pie recipe, the hub of her home replicates a 19th-century country style while satisfying the 21st-century lifestyle of a growing family.
Shaker Style
This log cabin's kitchen boasts the functionality of a farmhouse cookery with the appeal of simple Shaker style. The island imitates a workbench that offers space for utensils and cookbooks. Its countertop, curly maple with a mineral oil finish, functions as a cutting board.
