Island & Sitting Area
Faced with a long, skinny kitchen and awkwardly placed appliances, the Koeblers decided to start from scratch. They gutted the space, saving the windows, which were original to the house, but removing a wall that divided the old kitchen from a small sunporch. A stainless-steel-topped island links the work center and the new sitting area, where comfy upholstered benches are tucked beneath the windows. Now, the couple's four- and six-year-old sons can play nearby while mom and dad cook.

A little online bargain hunting helped Angie find a less-expensive alternative to the pricey tiles she'd seen in a showroom--from the very same company, Waterworks.
Give and take
"The Viking range was our big splurge," says Angie. "But instead of a brand-new dishwasher, we simply had a $78 stainless-steel panel put on the old white one."

Clean sweep
Easy cleanup is a must, so Angie chose tough granite countertops and undermounted sinks. "You can just sweep everything right into the sink," she explains.

Custom cabinets were chosen to complement the architecture of the house. Angie inventoried her kitchen to ensure the new units would provide plenty of storage.
