On weekends, there's no place John Budin and Scott Kalish would rather be than their farmhouse near the Delaware River, where colorful woodwork and plenty of sunshine create a warm welcome.
Colorful Early American Kitchen
The three-story farmhouse offered all that John Budin and Scott Kalish wanted in a weekend retreat -- six acres, original fieldstone walls, and a sunny kitchen. But before the place fully felt like home, the owners needed to synchronize two distinct portions of the house. The original 1740s section was sound, but the 1780s addition, containing the kitchen, had strayed from its Early American roots.

Bright Kitchen Island
"Integrity was key to us," says Scott. "We renovated the 1780s section without knocking down any original walls." Interior designer Celeste Callaghan gave the kitchen top priority. To begin, she replaced the black marble floor with 200-year-old wide-plank flooring. Known for his museum-quality reproductions, Ohio craftsman David T. Smith created a cooking cupboard, baking station, and cabinets to hide modern appliances. To the mix, Budin and Kalish added an 18th-century Quebecois bar painted mustard, and "matching" 1950s stools. "Now, you can practically live in here," says John.
"The kitchen has a relaxed, almost primitive look. That's what we feel goes with the 18th century."
