Sleek & Functional
PULLING IT ALL TOGETHER
Out With the Old
To improve the flow in the cooking center, the couple repositioned cabinet units. Then, they extended the countertop across the window, creating an eating area and prep zone.
In With the New
The re-vamped layout keeps all the essentials--the Maytag electric range and microwave, the KitchenAid mixer, and the classic Waring blender--in one compact corner.
Getting the Look
Schoolhouse Electric's reproduction lighting fixtures, vintage-style Ikea pot rack, and subway tiles from Home Depot make for an effect that's country, but crisp.
Making It Green
The couple wanted to incorporate eco- friendly materials in their new kitchen and did so by installing cork flooring and using low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paint.
Before: Solid but Ugly
Creativity Counts: By rearranging and painting the "solid but ugly" cabinets, replacing tired surfaces, and installing new appliances, the owners of this Connecticut kitchen created a bright efficient space--on a budget, and with no demolition.

Before: Tudor Details
Perfect Match: One of the main goals of the renovation was to give the new kitchen a look that was appropriate to the architecture of the house, which has charming Tudor-style detailing throughout. To match the effect of the "six-over-one" double-hung windows, the homeowners ordered new cabinet doors with six glass panes, as well as hardware and fittings with an antique air.
